Fix Google Chrome in 64-Bit Windows 7

Submitted by Kenneth Pennington on Thursday, 22 January 200921 Comments

Many users who’ve installed the 64-bit version of the Windows 7 Beta build 7000 are experiencing difficulties with Google’s new browser: Chrome. Users with this problem will see a blank page instead of the default homepage on load. If the user attempts to visit a website, they will see an error message: “Aw, Snap! Something went wrong while displaying this webpage. To continue, press Reload or go to another page.” See the picture below.

Users who try to navigate to a website while running Googles Chrome on Windows 7 7000 64-Bit will see this Aw, Snap! error message.

Users who try to navigate to a website while running Google's Chrome on Windows 7 7000 64-Bit will see this "Aw, Snap!" error message.

To fix this problem:

  1. Go to Start. Find “Google Chrome” in the Programs list.
  2. Right click the Chrome icon labeled “Google Chrome” and go to Properties.
  3. Modify the “Target” field in the Shortcut tab. Add the line: “--in-process-plugins” to the back of your address.
  4. Modify the Target field in the Shortcut tab to look like this.

Modify the "Target" field in the Shortcut tab to look like this.

  5. You will need to modify the “Target” of any Google Chrome shortcut on your computer for each shortcut to work.
  6. All done! Enjoy Chrome!

In other news, we may see Windows 7 bundled with Google Chrome. Wouldn’t that be incredible?

    Hmm, in English.
Very good article, but an annoying amount of errors in the text.
For other that is wondering. The correct is
    –in-process-plugins
    and not
    -i-in-prosess-plugins

    Damn
    –in-process-plugins

Sorry. The blog automatically corrected my two dashes into one long dash.

The article should be fine now.

    3. dans l’onglet Compatibility, cocher Run this program in compatibility mode for :, et s

    Translation:

Better than that because if your default is Chrome on Windows 7, Hotmail mail redirected by the messenger, so you will also be a blank page. So I bring you another trick more “efficient”:
    1. go to C: \ Users \ Your Username \ AppData \ Local \ Google \ Chrome \ Application
    2. Right-click chrome.exe
    3. in the Compatibility tab, check Run this program in compatibility mode for:, and s

The problem is due to an incompatability between Windows 7 64-bit and the Chrome security “sandbox” where plugins run isolated from privileged system processes.

Be aware, while whis work-around does solve the bug and allows Chrome to run under Windows 7 64-bit, it does so by allowing plugins to run as part of the main browser process, defeating one of the major security features of Chrome. Using the switch ” –no-sandbox” will have the same effect, allowing you to use Chrome on W7-64, but also by disabling the security sandbox.

The Chrome developers are working on a fix for this bug.

This dos not work for me. When I follow the instructions and add “–in-process-plugins”, I get the error “The name… specified in the Target box is not valid…”

I have gone back and reread the instructions, but it just doesn’t work.

David W, make sure you are putting in — (two dashes) not one long one.

I’m having the same problem as David W. I also found out that I don’t have the folder AppData under my username. Any help would be most appreciated.

  • Kenneth Pennington (author) (author) said:

Hmm… AppData may be a hidden folder. Try typing it in the address box and navigating there.

I’m also getting the “name… not valid” error. Has anyone worked around this?

@fmayle86 - j’ai coche “Run in compatibility mode” mais quel OS dois-je choisir? Je comprends pas ton “s”.

Not sure what’s going wrong for some of you guys. This might be a problem in later builds of 7? This fix was originally made and tested with build 7000.
