Windows 7 Release Candidate Being Compiled?

Submitted by Kenneth Pennington on Tuesday, 17 February 20093 Comments

According to the popular tech website, Geeksmack, Microsoft has begun compiling Release Candidate builds of its Windows 7 operating system. While all of the pre-beta and beta builds have run along the winmain string, now a new build, 7048.winmain_win7rc1.090211-1625, is the first found to branch off of the winmain string into the win7rc1 string as seen above.

The build was compiled on February 2, 2009 at 4:25 PM. This goes to suggest that beta testers should see a Release Candidate 1 version coming their way within two to three months. As reported earlier, Microsoft then plans to skip from RC1 to the RTM version of Windows 7 which will be released to consumers. The Release Candidate 1 version should have the user account control fixed in response to complaints about insecurities within the system.

Update: Geeksmack is now reporting that they made an error in their post.

When we said that build 7048.winmain_win7rc1.090211-1625 was compiled, we meant build 7041.winmain.090211-xxxx. We are unsure of the exact time that the build was compiled, but it was compiled on February 11th, and, according to the build tag, this isn’t in the RC branch of builds.

They’ve done a good job if it goes straight from Beta 1 > RC1 > RTM. I can’t wait to get my hands on the RC1 build to see what has changed!
